The TRAIL programme takes a holistic approach to enhancing livelihoods of smallholder farmers in the East Acholi region of Northern Uganda. Funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) and in partnership with Mercy Corps, TRAIL cascades a specially developed training programme to 60,000 farmers, improves farmers’ access to financial services and improves the function of regional markets for economic security and growth.

The Five Pillars

1. Economic growth:
Increasing farmer productivity targeting 35% increase in farmer incomes and profits.

2. Environmental protection:
Education on modern, sustainable agriculture practices and ongoing technical support enabling some farmers.

3. Gender and youth focus:
Viable livelihoods and new job creation targeting youth between the ages of 15-24 and women small holder farmers. 

 

4. Technology and innovation:
Integration of technology to scale operations, enable efficiencies and small holder farmers to access services (information and finances) and impact reporting.

5. Conflict sensitivity and Do No Harm:
analysis of tensions in the operational areas to reduce potential negative impacts of the program and strengthen positive impacts.

 
 

The Model

 

 

  • GADC delivers training and supports the creation of farmer groups leading to increased yields, crop diversification and market linkages for 60,000 smallholder farmers. 
  • Without obligation, farmers sell their crop directly to GADC through our network and receive immediate payment, providing income security. Certified organic farmers receive a price premium.

GADC has been implementing the Small Holder asset financing project with Agdevco’s small holder development Unit with co funding from Agdevco an impact investor in Africa, since August 2016. This is a two year Project till July 2018 AgDevCo established an internal Smallholder Development Unit (SDU) which works with rural agricultural enterprises to develop equitable outgrower schemes.  The SDU is intended to boost productivity and incomes for smallholder farmers This project covers 300 VSLA;s  in the Lamwo district and 200 in Pader distrct respectively These 500 VSLA’s comprise of 15,000 farmers The VSLA’s are drawn from 13 Subcounties in Lamwo and Pader District. Four subcounties are in Pader district namely; Atanga, Laguti, Acholibur, Latanya, while nine subcounties are in Lamwo i.e  East,Padibe T/C, Paloga, Lokung and Potika  Palabek Ogili, Palabek Kal, Palabek Gem, Padibe West, Padibe The 2-year SDU program is valued at $923, 045 with GADC contributing $414,471  (45%) and SDU contributing $508,574 (55%) covers Layered extension services, intended to improve farmers productivity and Household income by training and supporting 500 VSLA’s. Developing the farmer credit history and implementing loan monitoring tools. Providing inclusive demand driven asset loans for basic tillage and other yield improving assets to 500 borrowers. As well as improving access to financial services and financial literacy for rural communities, while improving farmer/ borrower access to markets. The  project  covers activities such as  VSLA registration, VSLA modular training, VSLA  borrower database and analysis, Insurance Enrollment Database, Farming as a business Video screening to VSLA’s, Asset Training, Insurance Training, Field Days, Loan Officer Training and loan disbursement

As a means of expanding cotton and sesame production, building community financial capability and diversifying the sourcing model, GADC has established an agriculture-specific asset finance scheme for rural farmers in Gulu.

GADC has embarked on the Development and implementation of a sustainable asset finance scheme for organic cotton farmers in Gulu, Northern Uganda

This is a project implemented with grant funding from GIZ. The duration of this project is May 15th 2017 to October 15th 2019. The Project budget is Euro 299,597.

 The Project covers 5,000 farmers in Gulu region of Northern Uganda

The Project has the objective to sustainably increase the access of local organic cotton smallholder farmers to asset finance. At the end of the assignment 5,000 cotton smallholder farmers in Gulu have access to sustainable locally available and medium term (beyond the project time frame of 3 years) finance for productive asset (loans)

The Research and Development Coalition Partnership is a collaboration between GADC and Technoserve to pilot a switch from home saved to hybrid maize seeds by smallholder farmers. Running to August 2018, this research project researches the behaviour change required and effect of incentives, methods to encourage high rates of female participation in production and marketing, and promoting farming as a family business.
